WASHINGTON, DC, UNITED STATES, July 31, 2020 / — The supporters of Animal Wellness Action have truly made a difference for our iconic American wild horses and burros in the past few weeks. Many of you read several of our most recent blogs regarding the BLM’s Draconian plan to roundup horses and burros on public lands and turn them into captives, and you took action and told Congress to do something about it. Your efforts, and that piece, sparked ABC News Live to run a national story on the issue, and then we pursued an $11 million amendment to a major House spending bill that included annual funding for the Department of the Interior and its Bureau of Land Management.

The amendment directs the BLM to use those dollars to implement humane fertility control within the wild horse and burro populations. Using the funding for Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) would prevent the money from being utilized for inhumane helicopter roundups, mass holding of horses in government-run facilities, and highly invasive and painful surgical sterilization in the field, often conducted in sweltering heat. Each horse in government holding costs the taxpayer $1,600 per year, and even the BLM Acting Director William Perry Pendley has said the agency’s massive round-up plans would cost $5 billion. We can save a mountain of cash, during our national emergency, by applying fertility control in the field and keeping horses and burros on the range. A dose of PZP costs $30, and there is an army of volunteers ready to work with BLM and pitch in.

U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., a “knight in shining armor” for the horses in Congress, stepped up in a big way by leading the effort to fund PZP, and was joined by Republicans and Democrats from all over the U.S., including many western states where the wild horses reside: Reps. Dina Titus, D-Nev., Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., Joe Neguse, D-Colo., Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Penn, David Schweikert, R-Ariz., David Price D-N.C., Peter King, R-N.Y., Deb Haaland, D-N.M., John Katko, R-N.Y., Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and Ben McAdams, D-Utah. Rep. Titus gave a gripping speech in front of the House Rules Committee. Cohen himself may have said it best regarding the amendment that “will force the Bureau of Land Management to move away from cruel and costly helicopter roundups toward humane management of these national symbols of our wild lands.”

And Cohen didn’t stop pushing for horse protections with those in the wild; he also lead another amendment that require $750,000 be utilized by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) to complete an audit by July 31, 2021 of USDA’s Horse Protection Program, enforcement of the Horse Protection Act, and Slaughter Horse Transport Program. The last audit was completed in 2010 and clearly detailed the ineffectiveness of the USDA’s Horse Protection Program that has failed to end the practice of soring — the intentional infliction of pain to Tennessee Walking, Racking, and Spotted Saddle horses feet and limbs to achieve an artificial high-step known as the “big lick” that’s rewarded at prized events in Tennessee and throughout the Southeastern U.S. That audit should prove to be a valuable tool in our efforts to end the soring and to permanently outlaw horse slaughter in the U.S.

Far too many bureaucrats at USDA have been lax in regulating these inhumane practices. Like the PZP effort, that second amendment passed overwhelmingly by a voice vote and was cosponsored by Reps. Fitzpatrick, R-Penn., Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., Kurt Schrader, D-Oregon, Ron Estes, R-Kan., Steve Chabot, R-Ohio, Peter King, R-N.Y., Tony Cardenas D-Calif., Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., and John Katko, R-N.Y.

Cohen’s colleague, Joe Neguse, also stepped up and led an amendment that provides OIG with $1,000,000 in funding to enforce animal cruelty laws to crackdown on cockfighting, bestiality, and animal crushing. Reps. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Madeleine Dean, D-Penn., Posey, Fitzpatrick, Cohen, Estes, Cardenas, King, Ann Kuster, D-N.H., McAdams, and Tim Burchett, R-Tenn co-sponsored that amendment that also passed the House by voice vote.

And in addition to this funding, the base bill we all jumped in to amend doubled USDA’s Horse Protection Program’s budget from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000 for 2021, a provision pushed by Rep. Hal Rogers, R-Ky., for a program that had never had more than $700,000 before last year. It also included language that urges the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture — whomever that may be in 2021 — to implement a 2017 regulation that would eliminate the use of large stacked shoes and ankle chains used in the soring of horses to exacerbate the pain. In a one-two punch back in 2017, President Obama’s Administration had failed to publish the final rule, and President Trump’s team prevented it from moving forward in the new Administration.

U.S. Rep. Andy Barr, R-Ky., championed an amendment to the spending package that easily passed, providing $5 million to the Veteran’s Affairs Administration for equine assisted therapy to help our American heroes who’ve suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Those who’ve served our country will rest easier with the help of horses who may have otherwise ended up in the slaughter pipeline.

And last night, Neguse stepped up again and ushered to passage an Animal Wellness-backed $1 million amendment that provides the U.S. Department of Justice funding to help create and Animal Cruelty Crimes Unit that would enforce the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act that President Trump signed into law last November, and other anti-cruelty laws that not been properly exercised. This comes on the heels of Animal Wellness’ recent cockfighting investigations in Oklahoma, Alabama, and Tennessee that revealed terrible multi-million dollar shipments of gamecocks to Guam, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. Territories. Neguse was joined in this effort by Gaetz, Fitzpatrick, Ben McAdams, Bill Posey, Cohen, Cardenas, Jamie Raskin, D-Md., Katko, Titus, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., and Schrader.

These are very important gains in the House, and now we need to replicate them in the Senate. We owe much of this success to you, the supporters of AWA, and we applaud each of you along with Cohen, Neguse, and the Members of Congress who championed and supported these measures. We need you to help out one more time by taking action here asking your Senators to do their part to protect the animals we all care so deeply about.

When water flows uphill: CA nonprofit helps homeless deal with COVID by importing masks from Asia and Africa

The homeless are already the most vulnerable people in society, with COVID, if they do not have protection, their health is even more imperiled”

— Robert Freeman

LIVERMORE, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2020 / — A California nonprofit is importing COVID masks from its sewing centers in Africa and Asia. The masks help homeless people in the San Francisco Bay Area deal with the COVID crisis.

The Global Uplift Project (TGUP), based in Livermore, CA, operates sewing centers in Kenya and Nepal. Those centers have made and distributed more than 45,000 COVID masks for use by local populations.

In July, TGUP brought 500 masks from each country and distributed them through homeless agencies in San Jose, Oakland, and San Francisco. The masks are paid for by local donations to TGUP. They are given free of charge to homeless people in each of the three cities.

Historically, TGUP’s altruism flows in the other direction, from the U.S., outward. The organization builds classroom, medical clinics, and other small-scale infrastructure projects in developing countries. It has built 135 such projects since its founding in 2007.

When the COVID pandemic hit, TGUP’s founder, Robert Freeman, recognized the challenge for California’s homeless. He converted the organization’s sewing centers in Kenya and Nepal from sewing sanitary kits for adolescent girls, to sewing masks, both for local use, and to send to the U.S., to help the homeless.

Freeman is acutely aware of the irony of people from the developing world sending medical aid to help people in the richest country on earth. “It’s like water flowing uphill,” he said.

Kenya ranks 160 out of 184 countries in per capita GDP, according to the CIA 2020 Factbook. Nepal ranks slightly lower, at 165 out of 184 countries. Yet, workers in those countries are helping homeless people here in the U.S.

“The homeless are already the most vulnerable people in society,” Freeman said. “With COVID, if they do not have protection, their health is even more imperiled.”

TGUP has partnered with HomeFirst Services in San Jose and Bethany United Methodist Church in San Francisco to distribute the masks to people on the street.

Andrea Urton, CEO of HomeFirst Services, emphasized the need for homeless people to have masks. “There are an estimated 10,000 homeless people in Santa Clara County,” she said. “Every one of them needs a mask, at all times.”

With materials, labor, and shipping, the masks cost approximately $1. They are made in both countries by seamstresses that earn 30% above the local minimum wage. Also, for every mask sent to the U.S., TGUP donates four masks for local distribution.

The $1 cost is a fraction of what a comparable mask would cost when made in the U.S. The low cost is one of the reasons TGUP can make them available at no cost to the homeless, here. The masks are made of cloth and are washable and reusable.

Freeman’s ambition is that as long as the pandemic persists, every homeless person in the U.S. has a mask. “They are no less in need of personal protection than is anyone else,” he said.

TGUP is a 501c3 nonprofit. It has raised funds from private foundations to cover its “back office expenses.” These include phones, literature, travel, website hosting and more. As a result, 100% of every dollar donated by an individual goes to the project they have designated.

Weiner and Watts: Will Gen Z Vote or Have They Lost Faith from Inaction on Police, Climate, Health, Guns, Women

Robert Weiner

WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2020 / — Former White House Drug Policy spokesman Robert Weiner and policy analyst Kyra Watts have published an article in OpEdNews (ranked H1 as #1 op-ed in the nation) asking whether or not Generation Z will turn out to the polls in November. They assert, as their title asks, “The key question for Election 2020 is, will Generation Z vote or have they lost faith from inaction and opposition on police reform, climate change, health, gun control and women? Do they see hope in changes at the top– at the White House and the Senate? What about elections at every local level?”

Weiner and Watts begin, “According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2018 election saw a 79% increase in voter turnout among people ages 18 to 29 years old compared to the 2014 congressional elections. This is a major improvement over the traditional non-participation by young voters. We're constantly questioning why younger generations are lacking enthusiasm when it comes to voting. Big challenges remain. Generation Z, those born between 1995-2015, has experienced many traumatic instances, whether directly or indirectly, throughout the years. Just to name a few:

· The Columbine School Shooting (1999)

· 9/11 (2001)

· The Great Recession (2007-2009)

· The Trayvon Martin Shooting (2012)

· The Sand Hook Elementary School Shooting (2012)

· The killing of Eric Garner (2014)

· The Parkland School Shooting (2018)

· The COVID-19 Pandemic (2020)

· The killing of George Floyd (2020)

· Black Lives Matter Protests (2020)”

They continue, “All of these events were nationally broadcast and many sparked reactions all over the country, some violent, some not. The evolution of our nation's technology has blessed us with the ability to share information in seconds from just about anywhere in the world, but this blessing is bittersweet. With that ability came the recurring reminder of all of the tragedies that were taking place in this country during such a short time period.”

They write, “How can we expect the country's young people to want to be involved when they've witnessed or been made aware of such tragic events and never saw any action-based ramifications? They see people their age dying due to gun violence from other kids, adults and even police officers, but then they see their government officials and police arguing for keeping choke holds and immunity the same. How can we expect them to believe that the government is truly for the people if they feel like they haven't experienced it?”

They contend, “We have to encourage a look at our American History. There have always been laws in this country and not all citizens agreed with the laws in place, but they didn't just sit back and stay silent. There were protests. Citizens used these protests to seek attention from their government and to express their concerns.”

They explain, “In 1773, American colonists dumped 342 chests of tea into the Boston Harbor to protest ‘taxation without representation’. We know this as the Boston Tea Party. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. led the March on Washington for jobs and freedom to draw attention to the racial discrimination of African Americans in this country. In 1993, roughly 800,000 people gathered to march for LGBTQ Rights in Washington, D.C. In 2003, millions of people marched in cities across the world to protest President George W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq.

They go on, “We've always had to make adjustments to legislation because we as Americans are constantly evolving, but the one thing that hasn't changed is the effective method of protesting. Our voices are louder together than they are separate. We see that now with the clear power to draw attention to everything going on in this country.”

They point out, “People's voices are finally being heard — not because no one was listening, but because everyone started speaking out together. Citizens of this country need to start utilizing our first amendment rights more often, not less, despite the White House brutality against protesters from Lafayette Park to the streets of Portland, Oregon – and from Black Lives Matter to March for our Lives against mass murders in schools.”

They continue, “We are the ones that have to live and work in this country. Why not fight for what we want with the tools that we have? We have our voices and the right to vote. Those two shouldn't be taken lightly, because together they can both help evoke change throughout this country. But we can't put all of the responsibility on the people. Our government needs to continue to listen and make changes for the betterment of our nation for all of our citizens.”

They contend, “Protestors are calling for social reform. Since the Black Lives Matter protests that began earlier this year, confederate monuments are being taken down all over the country, companies are taking a stance and speaking out in support, police reform has taken some baby steps and officers have been arrested for the murder of George Floyd. This is only the beginning.”

Weiner and Watts conclude, “The message of the great, just departed John Lewis, who strongly supported the Constitutional amendment giving youth the vote as well as full voting rights for all minorities, was persistence. We can continue to make this country a better place for ourselves and generations to come, but we have to be willing to put in the work if we the people want to continue to see results.”

Michael Weinstein, Democrat, for State House

As a former prosecutor and current board-certified criminal trial lawyer, Michael Weinstein has the experience and credentials to ensure safe communities

I’ll use this experience to ensure we are holding those who commit crimes against women, children and families accountable for their actions. ”

— Democrat Michael Weinstein for Statehouse

PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, July 30, 2020 / — Candidate Michael Weinstein for Florida State House has a proven track record of supporting and protecting women, children and seniors. He is a life-long Democrat who has spent his entire career as an advocate for fairness, justice and equality.

“As a former Prosecutor, I know what it takes to keep people safe. I spent years in our courtroom holding criminals accountable, standing up for women’s rights and protecting our seniors, children and families from violence,” states Weinstein. “In 2001, I was considered one of the top prosecutors in my office because of the work I did to uphold the law, protect families and ensure justice was served.”

Additionally, Weinstein drafted court rules and procedures to be used across the state and was appointed to the United States Military Academy Board Nominating Committee by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson.

“I’m a Board Certified Criminal Trial lawyer and served three terms on the Florida Criminal Procedure Rules Committee. I’ll use this experience to ensure we are holding those who commit crimes against women, children and families accountable for their actions. That’s why I have been endorsed by hundreds of local residents in District 81.”

As State Representative, Weinstein will ensure Florida has laws in place to protect the communities. His plan to keep women, children and seniors safe are outlined below:

* Supporting gun safety laws including banning assault weapons and expanded background checks
* Ensuring our police and firefighters have the resources they need to protect the community
* Backing programs that protect children and women from domestic violence
* Support legislation that protects seniors from fraud and abuse
* Investing in programs to keep our youth out of trouble

Raised by generations of Democratic leaders, Weinstein learned at an early age the importance of public service and having the courage to stand up for what you believe in. His grandfather Moses Weinstein was an advocate for justice and served as Speaker of the New York State Assembly. His father Peter Weinstein was the Florida Democratic Senate Majority Leader and a former Chief Judge who fought for first responders and seniors. His mother Dr. Barbara Weinstein served as CEO of Family Central, a non-profit that works to support families and children across South Florida. Michael’s brother is a President Barack Obama appointee to the Holocaust Museum.

Florida deserves an honest candidate that fights for injustices for all, listens to and supports its community, and creates change through efficient prioritization. Weinstein not only has the professional expertise but also the know-how to lead Florida into a new era of transformation for today and tomorrow’s generations.

House District 81 is an open seat. Weinstein and his wife are raising their nine-year-old daughter in the district. He is the only candidate in the Democratic Primary who lives in the District. The election is on Tuesday, August 18th.

Attorney Aaron Schlossberg Further Discusses the New York City Moratorium on Eviction Proceedings Due to the Coronavirus Pandemic

NEW YORK, NY, USA, July 30, 2020 / — Attorney Aaron Schlossberg further discusses the New York City moratorium on eviction proceedings due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The lives of New Yorkers have been drastically altered by the Covid-19 pandemic. The city was the heart of the pandemic in the United States for weeks, experiencing more than 30,000 deaths and almost 400,000 cases of the virus. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg recently explained that a number of changes were made to landlord and tenant negotiations as well. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg explained that the city put into place a moratorium on evictions, so landlords can't remove tenants for failing to pay rent due to this pandemic.

The city has practically been put on-hold for months now, and some who are out of work and facing characteristically high New York City rent prices, are finding it impossible to pay. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg explained that this moratorium on eviction proceedings has now been extended far through the month of August. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg added that this moratorium has also encouraged some landlords to use the security deposits they are holding in lieu of a traditional rental payment if needed.

However, Attorney Aaron Schlossberg explained that this is clearly not a long-term solution that is ideal for landlords or tenants. Landlords can go without pay for their properties, many of which still need to pay mortgages, and tenants can fall into holes of debt, making it even more difficult to recover.
"We fear that this could put tenants in some extremely difficult situations," Attorney Aaron Schlossberg said. "Skipping several months of paying rent could put them in thousands of dollars of debt when the moratorium is lifted in August."

Attorney Aaron Schlossberg explained that this coronavirus pandemic is unprecedented, and New Yorkers are doing everything possible to maintain some kind of normalcy. He noted that the situation is difficult for landlords and tenants alike, and finding a solution that works for everyone would be nearly impossible. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg added that if landlords are unable to pay their mortgages, they could face foreclosures, and we could see a major downfall in the real estate market. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg explained that the coronavirus pandemic has caused a financial disaster regarding rent and mortgages across the city.

Attorney Aaron Schlossberg is an expert on landlord-tenant conflicts, and he foresees a number of new landlord-tenant issues arising due to this pandemic. He hopes and foresees that both parties can find some sort of financial relief, so tenants can continue paying rent, landlords can continue paying mortgages, and the economy of the City of New York can stay afloat.

"Tiger King" Joe Exotic Finds God in Prison, Requests Presidential Pardon in Letter to Josh Belcher Uncharted Podcast

The Josh Belcher Uncharted Podcast

Exotic says he has become a minister in prison, shares his thoughts on the death of George Floyd, blames politicians and Hollywood for America's race issues.

I have the platform. I have the mouth. And I truely [sic] believe I can unite THIS nation without politics.”

— Joe Exotic

NASHVILLE, TN, USA, July 30, 2020 / — On today’s episode of the Josh Belcher Uncharted Podcast, Belcher reads another exclusive letter from "Tiger King” Joe Exotic. This is the 2nd letter received from Exotic in prison, following the 3-page, single-spaced, handwritten letter received in early June and read at Exotic’s request on Episode 51.5 (June 3).

In his new 3-page handwritten letter, dated July 15, Exotic says he has been baptized in prison and has become a minister. He shares his thoughts on the death of George Floyd and declares that “this is not a race problem.” He goes on to blame politicians, Hollywood, canceled TV series Live P.D., and “a bad police system" for the race issues and accusations of police brutality dominating today’s news cycle. According to Exotic, the only solution is to overhaul the system and “change laws and give this country back to the people,” and he believes he can lead such a movement.

“I have the platform,” writes Exotic. “I have the mouth. And I truely [sic] believe I can unite THIS nation without politics. But I need our President to stand against corruption and make this right and pardon me sooner than later, so I can be a live face of change.”

He then gives a directive to fans… “Start a movement on Trump’s Twitter to pardon me and give me a chance to help save America. Be my voice."

Joe Exotic (aka Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage) became a household name earlier this year when Netflix released an eight-part documentary, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. In 2019, Joe was convicted on 17 federal charges of animal abuse and 2 counts of murder for hire, for a plot to kill Big Cat Rescue CEO Carole Baskin. He is currently serving a 22-year sentence in federal prison.

In his original letter, Exotic detailed new evidence that “2 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, 2 FBI agents and a federal wildlife agent all conspired to commit perjury.” He also claimed he was being abused in prison, saying “I have scars from the skin coming off of my arms from being strapped in a chair so tight and so long just for demanding answers."
